REAL AMERICAN HEROES

I just wanted to say how the staff of NYU medical center did an amazing job helping to save there patients.  After the hospital's emergency generator failed, nurses, doctors, and other staff help carry patients down 15 flights of stairs...IN THE DARk!!  and what makes this more amazing is that some of the patients were babies that were on manual respirators.  So I just wanted to acknowledge this medical staff and what an amazing job they did.   Thank you...

I also wanted to say how proud I am of my lovely girlfriend, Raya.  She is in nursing school, and I know she would have helped save those babies too!!

Blind man in a marching band

I have been learning piano from my teacher Cori over the past year or so.  It is a HARD process to remember every single note...but quite rewarding when I finally figure out a whole song.

I read the following article about a blind trumpet player.  Enjoy.

Solar energy: the future is now in New York

"“If everyone who could do this did it, there would be billions of dollars of energy savings in New York alone."

All I can say is I had no idea how available solar energy is in New York.  It is helping businesses and homes save or eliminate electric bills.  If you are interested read the article and contact OnForce Solar. .

Is Donald Trump an identity thief?

First he asked for Obama to release his birth certificate.  Now Trump is after Obama's passport and college records.  Whats next?  A blood, hair, and semen sample?  If I didn't know better, I would think Trump was trying to steal Obama's identity at this point.

A journalist from the Guardian made Trump and his cronies look pretty stupid.  Enjoy the  ARTICLE.

Save the environment...and your bank account

What can be better than lowering your energy expenses??    saving the environment at the same time.  Here are a few tips to help save on those pesky monthly bills:

  • If you have an old toilet or one with a high liter per flush, try putting a brick or two into the tank.  This will lower your water bill, as well as waste less water.
  • Set your water heater's thermostat to 120 degrees.  Most are delivered set to 140 degrees from the factory, which is much higher than needed.
  • Use compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs, wherever possible.
  • Buy products with the "energy star" logo.  TThere have a higher energy efficiency rating.
  • Instead of AC, use a ceiling fan and cover the windows with dark curtains.  Most ceiling fans use less electricity than a light bulb!
  • Unplug phone and ipod chargers when possible,  They drain electicity even when your phone is not plugged in.
  • Shut off your desk top computer when you are not using it.  Also, some computers also have power saving settings you can turn on.
Have some power saving tips of your own?  Please share in the comments section...

Blind Fury

A police station in London received several calls concerning a man walking around with a Samurai Sword.  The officers went to the location and confronted a man who was walking with a white cane and instead of asking questions of said man they decided to just taser him with 50,000 volts of electricity.  When cops realized their mistake they eventually caught up with another man who was actually carrying a Samurai Sword and arrested him.  I don't blame the cops obviously they had seen the movie and true story, Blind Fury with Rutger Hauer which depicts a bland man that conceals a  sword in his walking cane.  Below is the article and the video is a trailer to Blind Fury.
Samurai Sword Or Walking Cane?

Legatron, turkey-cheddar-apple meatballs, , and Romney's "sketchy" deal

Until this season in the NFL, only 11 kickers had hit a 60 yard field goal.  This season, Ryan Zerline (Legatron), Jay Feely, and David Akers have all eclipsed that elusive mark.  And we are only 6 weeks into the season.  I think next year fantasy football scoring needs to include a 6 point field goal.  To understand and respect the difficulty of a 60 yard field goal, watch this VIDEO

Obama sounded more aggressive in the 2nd presidential debate last night.  I think he took the criticisms of his lackadaisical first debate, and brought a little fire with him this go 'round.  .  Although I still found the debate to become extremely boring about 25 minutes in, I enjoyed When Obama dropped the ""sketchy"" line on Romney
DEBATE VIDEo

I made some turkey meatballs in my crock pot earlier this week.  The recipe was simple but they still came out pretty damn delicious if you ask Ray Ray, Tam Tam, or myself.  .  Here is a link to the turkey, cheddar, apple meatballs

LOCAL FOOD...buy it!

"Today supermarkets serve a different role. Five chains control about half the grocery sales in the United States, and the biggest victim of this is the local farmer. As the chains get larger, they purchase from larger and larger processing plants hundreds or thousands of miles away from the communities they serve. As a result, a recent University of Missouri study showed that half a dozen global food chain clusters tied to agribusiness giants dominated the market. Not only were family farmers often cut out of the mix, but the farmers who were left were forced to take bigger and bigger price cuts, making it difficult for them to survive. Today less than 20 cents of every dollar spent at supermarkets for food goes to the farmer.
A study of local businesses vs. chain stores conducted several years ago in several parts of the country found a profound difference in financial benefits to a community. One of the biggest differences was that local independent businesses bought twice as much in local goods and services than did chains and big-box stores. They also kept more of their profits in the local economy and gave more to local charities. A study of small towns in Maine demonstrated that even a small shift toward locally owned businesses could create the economic boost equivalent to attracting a major factory or another large employer. Just think of the difference your food budget could make if you shifted just 5 percent of your dollars to locally owned stores.
Futurists and earth scientists who study resource depletion believe that, at the current rate of human population growth and the steady decline of animals, plants, ocean life, minerals and oil, we would need seven planet Earths to sustain us through the end of the century. Since it’s unlikely we will be able to discover and exploit seven additional habitable planets in that time, it may make sense for us to evaluate our current trajectory of “endless growth” and consider changing course"

Close to my own heart

I have a google news alert for "Stem cells blind."  This means that everyday, I receive a news story that has to do with stem cells and blindness.  It keeps me up to date on new treatments and facilities that are helping to cure blindness.

This morning I received a story about a child, Chloe, who suffers from blindness.  She also suffers from a damaged pituitary gland and hormone problems, conditions that I deal with myself everyday.  I found this story especially touching because her family and friends were able to raise 25,000 pounds so that she could fly to China for a stem cell treatment.  This immediately made me think of the Chowder Cup; an annual fund raiser my friends and family started for me.  I cannot tell you how grateful I am each time. It makes me feel excited, invigorated,, loved, alive,  and most importantly, like I am  home.

Yoga, a treatment for autism?

It seems that yoga may help improve the behavior of children with autism in the classroom.   I think it should be taught in every elementary physical education class in the entire country.

Quote of the millenium

"When you grow up you, tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again"."

-Steve Jobs, 1995
