Blame it on the glass

A new STUDY shows that the shape of a beer glass effects how fast a person drinks the tasty beverage.  So all you binge drinking alcoholics out there...it's not you.  Just switch to a straight glass.  problem solved!

persistent genital arousal disorder

I have heard of some pretty crazy medical conditions in my day...but when I heard Rosanna Scotto talking about this on :Good Day New York:, I started laughing hysterically.  Did this lady fake one too many orgasms?  Is this her punishment?  You be the judge...

The Uncanny Granny

I like to keep up on the Rye, NY news.  It is where I was born and raised, and many of my friends still live in the area.

This morning I read an article about a 72 year old woman being attacked by knife at the Osborn Nursing Home.  This is the same nursing home my mother worked for over 10 years.

But I just wanted really to say this is one bad-ass granny.  The guy had a knife, and was probably half her age, and twice her size...And obviously a P.O.S. cowherd.  I hope he gets whats coming to him.  If you know anything about this crime, please contact the police.

AS FOR YOU , SUPER NINJA GRANNY, I WISH YOU A FULL AND SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Lance: Armstrong Hope in Dope?

Lance Armstrong.  The name stirs memories of national pride, athletic domination, as well as a inspirational victory over cancer.  But now he has admitted to doping.  In my opinion, this does NOT tarnish his reputation as a leader in the fight against cancer.  He chose to form a charity that has pumped millions and millions of dollars into cancer research and I will always applaud that.  Think of how many athletes these days, IE baseball players, who make hundreds of millions on their contracts, and do not start any charities.

But as an athlete, his accomplishments have all but been erased.  He was stripped of his 7 tour de France titles for doping.  For those that don't know, doping is a process where someone has there blood taken out, spun in a centrifuge, and then put back into them highly oxygenated.  This allows for greater athletic performance, less cramping, and more energy.

But again, regardless of his cheating ways, Armstrong put into motion a charity that has helped the lives of millions of cancer patients.  In an age of athletics when I am not surprised if ANYONE is caught cheating, I thank Lance for using his power and influence to help others/

Kingsbridge Ice Rinks...Please support the KNIC!

I just read the following article about a proposal to build an ice sports center in the bronx.  I think this is an incredible idea.  Aside from making sports like figure skating and ice hockey more accessible, future prospects such as a local hockey team are really exciting.  Spread the word and help support the KNIC!

The Singing Dragon

This is a continuation of my last post featuring the artists that fill our ears with music in the subways of NYC.  Danny Small is one of them and I am in love with his voice.  He said in one video that he used to sing with his band for former mob boss, John Gotti.  I actually believe it because he sounds so good.  Here are a couple more videos of the "Singing Dragon" also known as Danny Small singing My Girl, Lonely Teardrops, Crazy Love, Soul Man, Stand By Me, & These Arms Of Mine.

Music In The Subway

Most of the time I take the train to concerts in the city.  On a few occasions I have heard better music on the way to the concert than I did at the show.  One time a bunch of us were on the 1 train going to a Disco Biscuits show and this a-Capella group came on and started singing some Motown hits and of the two groups I saw that night they were def the best.  I read an article today that featured a couple subway musicians and it gave me the idea to search for more on youtube. So here are a few that I have found that are amazing. There are only so many videos that I can post so I suggest if you get a little bored find your own.  Some of the best NYC artists are singing in the subways.

Are you nuts for nuts?

I have always been a fan of nuts.  Especially when they are salty.  Nothing better than a mouth full of salty nuts...

But new research suggests that walnuts may resemble testicles for a reason.  because  they help your testicles!  A study found that walnuts improve the quality of men's sperm.  In addition, further studies will examine if walnuts help with a man's fertility.  So if you are trying to start a family head to costco and buy a 15 pound bag of those crunchy, tasty nuts.

Yo Soy a Soy Bean

Are you at risk ? - Everything in MODERATION !

WHY IS SOY PROTEIN BAD?

Why Is Soy Protein Bad?

Soy is a high-value crop in tropical and temperate regions. It is unique in its accumulation of both high levels of protein and vegetable oil. Soy protein contains naturally occurring chemicals called isoflavones, which are thought to be responsible for many health benefits of soy. The down-side of soy isoflavones cannot be overlooked, however. You should consult your doctor about whether to use soy formulas.

BREAST CANCER

Soy protein and its isoflavones may raise your breast cancer risk by mimicking estrogen, a female hormone. Genistein and daidzen, two principle isoflavones in soy protein, have been shown to increase the effects of estrogen in women whose estrogen levels have declined. Estrogen is essential to normal human health but elevated estrogen levels are linked to hormone-dependent breast cancers. Soy isoflavones act as the steroidal estrogen in the body and hold the risks of natural estrogens, according to the Sprecher Institute at Cornell University.

SOY ALLERGY

Some people report experiencing allergic reactions after eating soy protein foods. Soy food allergies can cause symptoms ranging from harmless skin reactions to gastrointestinal disturbances -- such as stomach cramps, indigestion, bloating, diarrhea, gas and nausea; shortness of breath; wheezing; difficulty in breathing and a sharp drop in blood pressure. In severe cases, patients may lose their consciousness.

THYROID DISEASE

People with existing thyroid conditions must be careful about how much soy protein they eat on a daily basis. Soy protein or its isoflavones can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones, specifically when eaten uncooked. This can lead to hypothyroidism symptoms, such as fatigue, depression, constipation, weight gain, skin changes, forgetfulness and goiter. The anti-thyroid effects of soy are predominantly caused by the inhibition of the enzyme thyroid peroxidase in thyroid hormone production.

GOUT

Consuming soy protein products, such as tofu, miso, soy milk, soy butter and soy nuts, could precipitate gout in some individuals. Gout is a painful inflammatory arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joint spaces. Uric acid forms from purine metabolism. Purine is a naturally occurring substance found in tissues and in particular foods. Soy protein foods are rich in purines, which encourage the production of uric acid in your body.

Warning Signs

A new and frightening addiction is sweeping across the nation.  At first, it may seem harmless, but long term abuse of hot sauce can cause permanent mental and physical harm.

Hot sauce, or "tha hizzle", can be used innocently enough at first.  A single drop on  eggs...a dash on pizza.  In small amounts, hot sauce may even be beneficial to one's health.  But it is a thin line between use and abuse....

Here are some early warning signs of a hot sauce addiction:

--buying the largest container available.  While a small 4 oz. bottle used to work, you now find yourself asking store clerks "is this 1 liter bottle of Frank's the biggest you got?:"?"
-beginning   to purchase multiple brands, styles, and heat levels.  Experimenting with the dangerously hot sizzle's such as Dave's Insanity Sauce, or Devil's Blood.
-Before deciding what food to order, you make sure to have a large, readily available amount of hot sauce in the house.

If a loved one has already displayed some of the early warning signs, be on the lookout for hints of a more serious addiction:

-The owning of a "sauce kit," such as a special dipping cup or ramican.  These are usually used to submerge an entire bite of food into the hot sauce,, coating the entire bite in The H Sizzle.   .
-Hiding empty bottles to conceal the amount of hot sauce that is being consumed.  Common hiding spots include the closet, under the bed, and out in the garage.
-sores on the hands from shaking an already empty bottle, irrationally waiting for that last drop to fall out.

If you know anyone who needs help, please call 1-800-say no to sizzle.  Here are a few clips to show the seriousness of this hot sauce epidemic:

Goodbye, and thank you Helen Brown

Most men have not read the magazine Cosmopolitan, but I can almost guarantee it has affected their sex lives.  The magazine covers such risque topics as oral sex tips, toys for the bedroom, and sexy role play costumes.

But  I think the magazine may have helped with something almost as important...the Women's liberation movement.  The magazineplayed an important part in helping women redefine societal gender roles.  So again, thank you Helen Brown, who once said "good girls go to heaven; bad girls go everywhere else."

What a Crock of...

deliciousness!

I own a slow cooker,/crock pot and I love it.  I used to use it once and a while, but after going blind I find it is the best, and easiest,  way to cook.  You can find countless recipes online.  Anything from beef stew, to mulled cider, to vegetarian chili, they have them all.  The best part is that much like Ron Papeil's gadget, you set it and forget it.    Here are a few recipes I have tried lately:

Pork Tenderloin

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Hearty Beef Chili

Tired Of The Still Images?

NBC has paid billions of dollars to cover the Olympics and in doing so has the right to protect their investment.  With that said if you were to go to any other station for highlights of the events that occurred all you will get is a long article accompanied by a still image of said events.  This is frustrating not just because NBC's coverage is so limited but also if you miss an event you are pretty much screwed.  Broadcasters in Australia got so fed up with airing still images that they decided to breakout a lego set to show their audience how Australian Sally Pearson won gold in the 100 meter hurdle race.  I think it is brilliant.

An Insight Into Mitch Hedberg through The Eyes Of His Widow.

I still remember the first time I heard Mitch Hedberg perform.  HBO was having a series called Young Comedians that featured my current favorites Bill Burr and Louie CK.  They had an episode once every week and I would go over to Andrews and we would involuntarily cry the jokes were so funny.  All 3 were great but I just fell in love with Mitch. I went to the Huffingpost today and saw a series called Modern Comedian and Episode 4 is all about Mitch through the eyes of his widow and fellow comedian Lynn Shawcraft. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 37 and he is still missed.

A Brave Young Woman

I read an article this morning about a young lady who is fighting two types of cancer.  I didn't understand how bad her situation was until watching the following video.

For me personally, it brought back some pretty emotional memories from my mother's battle with Leukemia.  My mother had the option to try a bone marrow transplant early on in her diagnoses, and she chose not too.  Bone marrow's are painful, hard to recover from, and have a high fatality rate.  Even if the operation goes well, many complications can arise afterwards.

But what this video inspired me to think is that we need to fortify the fight against cancer in general.  Donate to foundations like The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Sloan Kettering's Leukemia and Lymphoma research.  Any donation today could help someone with their fight tomorrow.

The Music Never Stopped...

at least in our hearts and minds.  But it has not been played at a specific venue in years.

But what do The Moody Blues, Bob Weir, Buddy Guy, Big Gigantic, Steve Miller, My Morning Jacket, Galactic, Al Green, and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe all have in common?  They are playing at the new, revamped CAPITOL THEATER in Port Chester, New York!  That is right.  The music is back at a venue I must have passed by 1,000's of times and never seen a single show.  Check out the upcoming, star-studded schedule for yourself.

"The Wimbledon of the Boogie Down"

The Bronx is home to some fantastic cultural and recreational centers.  The Bronx Zoo, Yankee stadium, the Botanical Gardens, Wave Hill, Van Cortland Park....and now there is going to be another.

The city has voted to fund a $22 million project to build a tennis mecca in Crotona Park.  I think this well bring in new business, more tourism, and more happy new residents to this great borough that is improving itself every day.

You Might be a Blind Guy.....

I thought I would borrowed from Jeff Foxworthy's formula, and apply it to my situation...

You might be a blind guy if...

..

- You have petted your girlfriend's faux fur vest thinking it was your roomate's cat.

- You have reached in to the fridge and grabbed a nice cool carton of rice milk...only to realize you just took a nauseating gulp of beef broth.

- You've worn almost every T-shirt you own backwards at one time or another.

-you have apologized to thousands of inanimate objects.

-your have brushed up against women's breasts and butts numerous times, and haven't been arrested or slapped.

- You have entered the sacred realm of the ladies room at a concert venue and lived to tell about it.
